Syllabus
1. Breath - A Communion of Air
~ We will learn exercises for training and supporting our flow of air, which is the root of all singing. Our breath is an affirmation of life, a celebration of the gift of our existence. Through breath we take in the world, and give our songs back as offering.
2. Space - Melodic Movement and Increasing Range
~ We’ll explore head voice, chest voice and mixed voice, as well as practices for flowing seamlessly from one to the next. Our melody wraps itself around its target and infuses it with magic.
3. Stillness - Deep Listening and Interval Training
~ In order to sing our favorite songs, we must know what we are listening to. This week focuses on common intervals found in Western music. We’ll listen and then sing them back. Deep listening teaches us to tune out the noise, and make space for what matters.
4. Rhythm - Decorating Time with Pattern
~ This week, we’ll practice hearing, understanding, and singing rhythmically. Rhythm is a series of patterns that create shape and distinction in the flow of tone. Rhythm is the dance of life!
5. The Well of Song- Relaxing and allowing music to flow through us
~ This week we’ll practice allowing. After a warm-up, we’ll ease up on technique and get playful with our voices. Too much concentration on “doing it right” leads to rigidity. We’ll play with the balance between awareness and abandon.
6. Color – Cultivating Emotion in our Song
~ Once we can rely on basic practices, we can give ourselves over to the emotion of our song. We’ll explore techniques such as belting and crooning, as well as ornamentation such as trills and vibrato. We’ll also explore enchanting a talisman. Let’s re-enchant our world with song!
